One of America’s great contemporary players takes you on a journey of discovery and insight into the world of jazz piano that will start you playing the right way. In a 90-minute lesson packed with information, music theory and keyboard technique, players getting their start in the jazz idiom will gain a wealth of knowledge and acquire the tools you’ll need to improvise jazz standards.
Warren Bernhardt’s clear, easy-to-follow method builds your keyboard skills step-by-step, starting with the most basic of concepts: proper hand positions, ascending and descending diatonic scales in 3rds, and an understanding of chord shapes, inversions and important chord progressions.
This is a course that will develop your ear as well as your fingers. As you work your way through Warren’s exercises and songs, you’ll learn to understand melodic improvisation, use tri-tones and blues scales, develop melodic ornamentation and gain many other important musical skills. By the time you have completed this first lesson in the series, you’ll be improvising Autumn Leaves and other famous jazz tunes. Next level Warren Bernhardt – Basic Keyboard Harmony Vol 2
He starts with the basics of scales, finger positions, triads and inversions. He is excellent with putting this information into the context of jazz playing. A true beginner on the piano would find this too advanced. But someone who has a little music theory and piano experience would be comfortable. His three volume set supplies the self-motivated, intermediate pianist with enough instruction in jazz theory, reharmonization, improvisation, comping, soloing, etc., to last a lifetime. Given the various costs of private lessons, a bargain at many times the price. Warren’s work is one of those that keeps you involved and interested. His development of the ideas is a nice step-by-step approach to improving one’s facility as a performer. You can’t help but improve your technique and musicial knowledge with Warren’s work.
