Keith also captures the essence of acoustic blues legends such as Lightnin’ Hopkins, Muddy Waters, and Lonnie Johnson.
Keith Wyatt s an outstanding instructor, and he takes you step by step through some basics foundational blues lines n this one. What’s here is excellent. However, the assumption is that having given you a few examples, you will be able to go off and improvise on your own.
No booklet or PDF file with this DVD but if you’ve learned to play the chord changes for 12 bars and a turnaround or two and want to take it to the next level, then there isn’t a better video that I’ve found that can open the door and give you the tools to play acoustic blues. Working exclusively in the key of E and A, Keith takes you through basic licks and tricks leaving room for you to work with what he gives you, that is bringing you to the door, providing the keys that will allow you to begin riffing and soloing – to get down and play 12 bar blues. Yes, he does present in detail some simple solos but the beauty of what he’s doing is that what you learn in one 12 bar lesson can then be combined with what you learn in the next to create something of your own and so on with the next piece and that my friends is as good as it gets. It depends on where you are with your playing, but if you are a few steps beyond beginner and looking to play the blues – this is a gift from heaven or maybe from the hellhounds of Hades.

Instructor Keith Wyatt teaches such subjects as: open-string chords, 12 bar progressions, strumming patterns, bass lines and much more.
This video features Keith Wyatt who is an accomplished guitarist and excellent instructor. Keith appears in many guitar instruction videos.
He starts off introducing the I-IV-V blues progression and teaches the progression in the key of E using open position 7 chords. He also shows the student how to spice up the progression using embellishments and base notes. The second section Keith teaches the blues shuffle in the key of E and again shows the student how to spice up the progression with embellishments and base notes. He also demonstrates some very basic turnarounds. At the end he introduces the use of a capo but doesn’t go into much detail.
He leaves the student not only with the ability to play some pretty cool sounding blues progressions but with some tools and advice that the student can use to play around and develop additional embellishments.
All of the material is very, very simple and straightforward. It does not cover soloing or anything very technical. A beginning guitar student could get a lot out of this.
An intermediate student who has no experience with acoustic style blues guitar can also learn a few tricks and have some fun going through the material.

Frank presents a clear and easy-to-understand guide to using modes in soloing. Frank takes a subject that guitarists often find confusing and explains it in simple terms. He covers all seven major modes and demonstrates the use of each in the context of some extraordinary solo work. Intermediate to advanced. DVD special features include a tuning segment and a bonus video performance (Allan Holdsworth, Joe Pass).
Jazz and blues guitar master Frank Gambale shows you how to play scales and leads in many different modes. In depth, he covers how to construct modal chord progressions, mode formulas and how to practice them in a modern popular context.
Frank does a great job of thoroughly explaining the significance of the modes of the major scale (dispels some common mistakes while he’s at it) and teaches the basics of modal progressions (much easier than it sounds). Of course, the solos he plays in the examples are both mind boggling and inspiring.
Although the liner notes say it’s for intermediate and advanced players, even beginners knowledgable of basic theory will understand with just a few viewings.
It comes with a small pamphlet mapping all the notes of each major scale mode on the fretboard (don’t worry if you loose it considering they’re just the standard mode charts you can find/print free from just about any guitar theory website).
Plus, you get bonus video performance footage of Allan Holdsworth, footage of Joe Pass, a preview of Frank’s “Concert With Class” DVD, etc… The video is very professionally edited.
Modal harmony is a very mysterious thing for most guitar players. If you are one of them this dvd will clear all your doubts, no doubt about it. Frank is a fantastic teacher and he treats this argument here in the best way. With clarity and precision. He leaves non space for any doubt. Absolutely. You really can’t do nothing but learn modes. It’s that strong and easy. Simply if you want modes not to cause you problems again watch this video. The first time you’ll be shocked and amazed by the amount of informations and stimulus you can get from Frank modal explanation. Seven worlds will be finally open for you, and music will never be the same for you.
Well if you want to know about modes and how to play them on the guitar; here it is. 92% of watchers thought this was a 5 (me included), what else can you say. The songs played some years ago sound a bit dated now, but all the material is spot on and you should understand everything much better when you’ve seen this. If you want more on scales and how to play mode there’s a very good DVD by Jimmy Bruno on the subject called “No Nonsense Jazz Guitar” that will also help you nail all the scales pattern and the modes within. This jazz approach by Bruno will give you some real insights to what Alan Holdsworth, Satriani, Vai and Gamable are doing with their fusion playing.

There are plenty of instructional videos made by players that are well know for their playing…and not for their teaching. Unfortunately many of these videos usually ignore vitual issues, and without those key aspects, there’s a limit to what you can learn.
Now this is not the case with Rock Discipline. John provides us a very solid video, that covers a wide range of techniques, from simple warm-up and stretching exercises, to legato and sweep picking, making it one of the top recommendations for aspiring rock guitarists.
John’s a great teacher, and instead of “drowning” the viewer with information, he takes the time to talk about his experience, and give useful advices between the various segments.
The dvd also includes some backstage footage, and band footage (2001 G3 tour) and comes with a detailed booklet. With all this, and nearly two hours of running time, it’s definitely worth it.
As you might know, there’s also a book version, and most of it’s content is covered on the dvd, so i’ve transcribed the main sections titles to give you an idea of what you can learn:

Joe Pass Jazz Lines PDF & DVD download. In Jazz Lines Joe Pass discusses the scales and arpeggios he uses when improvising. Joe also demonstrates non-stop improvised lines for: major 7th, minor 7th, static and altered dominant 7th chord types plus a special section on turnarounds. Get insight into how Joe ‘thinks’ while improvising.
The DVD includes a booklet with all of the video examples transcribed on the treble clef – with absolutely no tablature. If you live off of tab then I wouldn’t recommend this video, but if you can read music there is a wealth of information to study and learn from.
Joe breaks everything down to its simplest form – major, minor, or dominant. He covers everything very quickly and then goes to the examples, which he gives plenty of. However, if you’re hoping for some chord melody tips or counterpoint examples you’ll be disappointed with this video – it covers exactly what the title says: Jazz LINES. He does speak a little bit in the beginning about how he views chords but he doesn’t go beyond that.
For anyone looking to learn about playing jazz lines, improvising, or about Joe’s lead style in general, this is a fantastic buy. If you can’t read music but are interested in Joe’s style and can learn visually without too much grief, I would recommend the video, but the ability to read will certainly help you to get as much from the material presented as possible.
Joe Pass is one of the most influential and respected jazz guitarists in the world. He is know equally for his incredible single-line improvising as well as brilliant chordal playing.

However, if you want to see a guy that can REALLY play and do it effortlessly… Robben Ford is it. This video picks up on his previous video, so I would reccomend taking a look at that before buying this if you are a beginner.

Neil’s special approach to drums is featured in songs from “Test”, also a 4 camera shoot as Neil lays down the fiery creative drumming for which he is known. Other topics include a discussion of Neil’s DW drumset, his approach to odd times, playing with a vocalist & a “guided tour” of Neil’s warmup routine, lots more.
On this two-video, limited-edition box set, Neil Peart documents the “work in progress” of recording Rush’s new album, TEST FOR ECHO, as well as the work in progress of Neil himself and his endless apprenticeship to the art of drumming. On these history-making tapes, he uses the songs from TEST FOR ECHO to demonstrate concepts such as constructing a drum part, selecting rhythmic approaches, technique, odd times, the drummer’s role in a band, drum set orchestration and creative timekeeping.
Perhaps one of the best drummers in the world today and all you have to do to learn some of his licks is pop in the DVD. This DVD not only contains the songs from the Test For Echo album and how to play it but how Neil came to be the drummer he is today. He talks about the mechanics behind the new style that he has implemented into his playing that he learned from Freddy Gruber and explains why they work for him and how they could work for you. Neil also dissects the songs and goes over the hard fills.
The only draw back to this video is that he dose not play the fills slower him self but slows down the film. This is not anything to be concerned about though. The DVD also contains a performance only feature that lets you view his playing the whole Test For Echo album.
One of the best instructional videos ever made. Neil has gotten better with time, aged like fine wine. Too many people that think they know Neil are stuck in the past. The songs on Test For Echo are more simple in general than Rush’s earlier stuff, and in true Neil Peart fashion, the Professor shows how he spent painstaking hours coming up with just the right parts to compliment the songs, as he has never failed to do. The old drum parts were complex because the songs themselves had that quality, and so he always played accordingly with taste to suit the music.
This is a must have for drummers or fans. This DVD is like getting a private lesson from the professor. Neil starts with his style & how he changed after 30 years with the fine tutelage of Professor Freddy Gruber. Neil changed his style from match to traditional grip & found he had more control & fluidity. Neil plays each song then breaks it down by part & gives explanation of technique. There is also slow motion to help with the understanding of the parts.
