On this DVD, Dave concentrates on time playing, constructing a groove, beat displacement, cymbal technique, phrasing, creating a drum part, playing in odd times, and soloing. This video also features three performances of songs from Contemporary Drummers + One, a Latin groove, and some fantastic solos. This is a great instructional video. Dave is not an excellent teacher, but he is a very good one. His got amazing technique which he tries to pass on to you.
A super one from Dave. This is one the best instructional video and is a must buy after his initial ‘Back to Basics’ video. It’s the answer to all those ‘How does he do that! ‘ queries and an essential tutorial for any drummer serious on progressing. Kudos to Dave for bringing out such wonderful learning material.
His triplet exercises between the hands and feet are wonderful. When he does it up-tempo, you realize that that’s basically all he does while he solos: he goes in and out of triplets, sixteenths, and thirty-second notes. It’s still tough as hell, but at least we understand how he’s doing it.
Most helpful, though, is his explanation of how to approach odd time signatures. Even advanced drummers typically can’t “feel” nine, seven, or five, and Weckl offers some great tips on how to think of them in a musical, half-time feel.

The DVD will allow you see and hear Dave explain and demonstrate his new concepts of stick grip which leads to the contrast of his older tight into the kit approach as compared to his new flowing, powerful out the kit approach. He covers wrist technique, finger technique, and the rebound approach for both hands and feet. Stick choice and proper set up for flowing stress free playing are also covered. This DVD includes a cameo appearance by Fredie Gruber who explains some of the basics of technique that are cornerstones of Dave’s playing.

If you would like to improve your drumming technique you will love this DVD. In it Dave explains in detail wrist and finger contol, double stroke rolls and moeller techniques. He also talks about drum positioning and bass drum control. Dave’s system will allow you to play with less effort taking advantage of the natural rebound of the sticks.

This DVD is a must have in terms of learning to play drums with less effort. He talks about seating position, drum set positioning, wrist and grip, match and traditional grips in detail, shows basic snare exercises, Moeller Technique, foot position and it has also a Freddie Gruber special appearance.

Dave Weckl has become quite the virtuoso and with the passing of such greats as Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson Dave has assumed the mantel of the current day great players, in fact he made more sense in what he played in sixteen bars compared to the others he appeared with as part of a tour of great drummers.

Any drummer who understands the importance of technique to get the job done properly with an unending reserve of ability and endurance will appreciate this DVD lesson from a virtuoso drummer who will become mentioned in the same sentence as Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson and time passes. The live performances of his band as part of this production only add to the awe and excitement as you learn something from a person who can really play the drums.

This disc includes several tunes from Contemporary Drummers + One. An excellent overview of drum skills for any level drummer. Even with advanced drummers, you’ll get something out of the basics here. Weckl, although gives some basics, actually puts some really good insight on to them, it’s very surprising that even though you’re advanced you can get something out of it!

This and the Peter Erskine lessons are the most useful and user friendly. Couple this with the Art of Playing the Brushes and you have three winners. Buy a Drum kit and get swinging. Morello’s are also good if you can dig his sense of humor.
