A guide to the traditional blues playing style of the Mississippi bluesman who lived in Memphis and had a gift for storytelling and showmanship. GGW032 - John Miller - Legendary Country Blues Guitar Duets

Code : GGW032
Isi : 1 DVD9

John Miller Legendary Country Blues Guitar Duets. The Country Blues guitar duet tradition is rich and varied, but it has been relatively unexplored by present day blues players. This is a shame for a couple of reasons – there are a lot of great duets that merit being worked out and played for today’s audiences, preserving the music, but there’s also just the sheer enjoyment and fun involved in playing this music with a kindred spirit, someone who hears and responds to this music as you do yourself. In several instances, the two guitar parts are played out of different tunings or positions. In the course of the lesson, you’ll work through and learn Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie’s Pile Drivin’ Blues, Walter Beasley and Sylvester Weaver’s Toad Frog Blues, Will Batts and Dan Sane’s Country Woman, Yank Rachell and Dan Smith’s Squeaky Work Bench Blues and Frank Stokes and Dan Sane’s What’s The Matter Blues.
For each one of the songs in the lesson, John and Frank take turns teaching their parts, which are then shown in slowed-down split-screen versions of each duet part followed by the two guitars together. TAB and standard notation of the guitar parts and the song lyrics are included as a PDF file on the DVD, as are the original recordings of the songs. You can choose to learn one or the other of the parts, or learn both parts and teach one to a friend. There is a richness in shared musical performance that is yours for the taking here. Learn Legendary Country Blues Duets and find out just how rewarding playing Country Blues with another guitarist can be.

GGW031 - John Miller - Texas Blues Guitar

Code : GGW031
Isi : 1 DVD

Description
featuring Willie Reed, Mance Lipscomb, Funny Papa Smith, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lil' Son Jackson
The state of Texas has had a major presence in the Blues, from the earliest days of the recording era right on up to the present day. So many tremendous Blues musicians have hailed from Texas, i.e. Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightnin' Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Freddy King. This DVD focuses on the Country Blues guitarists who first defined the Texas Blues sound and who put Texas on the map as a prime location in Blues Country.
In this DVD lesson you'll have an opportunity to learn from the music of the greatest of the early Country Blues singer/guitarists, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Texas sharecropper and songster Mance Lipscomb, the almost forgotten Otis Harris, ace lyricist Funny Papa Smith, the spectacular and under recorded Willie Reed, and the Post-War master Lil' Son Jackson. This is powerful and challenging guitar music, and the technique building that will result from learning to play these songs will take your blues playing to a new level.
A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. This includes all the lyrics to the songs as well as transcriptions of the guitar playing. The original old recordings of all the tunes is also included.
Titles include: WILLIE REED Dreaming Blues, MANCE LIPSCOMB Tell Me Where You Stay Last Night and Rocks and Gravel Makes a Solid Road, OTIS HARRIS You'll Like My Loving, FUNNY PAPA SMITH Fool's Blues, BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON That Crawlin' Baby Blues, LIL' SON JACKSON Groundhog Blues

Review: This is part of a series of "geographical" blues lessons by John Miller. This review covers them all. John Miller is a gifted instructor. Many artists are gifted players, but they do not all possess the gift of teaching. John Miller's teaching is a slow, methodical breakdown with anticipation of student struggles. His demeanor is humble, quiet, respectful, and enthusiastic for the music. With judicious use of the pause button, it is as close as a student can come to face to face lessons with a master.
The series highlights some of the lesser known blues songs of regional greats from long ago. The songs are wonderful to learn to sing, but for me, they are, almost to a song, terrific for acoustic solo playing. Each region has its specifics but they are perfectly suited for instruction to the Intermediate guitarist (late beginners should collect John's DVDs) as well as the Advanced guitarists who need to learn new songs.
Each geographical region has its unique songs, and John's teaching is consistent throughout. "Texas Blues" is currently my favorite, but this changes as I go from DVD to DVD. Jackson Blues, Texas Blues, Memphis Blues, Atlanta Blues as well as Theory and Chord instruction DVDs are all 'must haves' for those who learn from DVD lessons. - Peter Hyatt/Amazon Customer Review
Review: Interesting obscure songs that are intermediate level. I couldn't find any sort of "preview" online so I took a chance and just ordered it. It is a winner. The instructor, John Miller, is a quiet guy. I like that he comments on the various phrases as he is in "teaching the song mode". Sometimes its a bit fast but that is what the DVD pause is for. In addition to the songs being played by Miller you also get the original song recordings. Not sure how useful that was to me since I couldn't always make out some of the songs. Maybe my hearing is just shot.
The only con is that he knows that you have the TAB so he describes a number of phrases a bit too superficially. I would like to know more of "why" a phrase leading to another works. Its not super important but would be nice to help master these songs and make them your own. The best part and the reason I bought this is the songs are not so well known. Fun to learn something I haven't heard before so that by the time I learn it I haven't worn it out. And its fun to play for friends unknown tunes. So that is a important aspect of this collection of tunes for me. - theRangel/Amazon Customer Review

GGW030 - John Miller - St. Louis Blues

Code : GGW030
Isi : 1 DVD

John Miller St. Louis Blues Guitar. The city of St. Louis played host, in the 1920s and 1930s, to one of the most distinctive and vital blues scenes ever documented on record. Like Memphis and Atlanta, St. Louis served as a sort of magnet, attracting musicians from the surrounding hinterlands and providing performance opportunities that were not available out in the country. Many of the St. Louis musicians were transplanted Mississippians, like Charley Jordan, while others, like Clifford Gibson and Teddy Darby, originally hailed from Kentucky. The various early influences that the music of these players displayed ended up coalescing into something that might be called the “St. Louis sound”.
Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of the songs of Teddy Darby, where the guitar and voice track each other closely, Clifford Gibson, with his distinctive approach to playing in Spanish tuning and the mysterious low cross-note sound, Charley Jordan, with his acrobatic thumbwork and occasionally raggy sound, and the enigmatic Lane Hardin, who only recorded two titles under his own name. The songs selected for inclusion in the lesson have been chosen to introduce you to a variety of different tunings and playing positions, and employ different right hand approaches that will expand your ability to utilize techniques like thumb lead and brush strokes.
A PDF file is included on the DVD which can be printed out into an easily readable, 8.5” by 11” booklet, including not only detailed transcriptions of the songs, but the songs’ lyrics, as well. As well, all of the original recordings from which the transcriptions were made are included on the DVD.

Titles include:
  • Clifford Gibson – Don’t Put That Thing On Me
  • Teddy Darby – Lawdy Lawdy Worried Blues
  • Clifford Gibson – Brooklyn Blues
  • Charley Jordan – Just A Spoonful
  • Lane Hardin – Hard Time Blues
  • Charley Jordan – Big Four Blues

GGW029 - John Miller - Memphis Blues Guitar

Code : GGW029
Isi : 1 DVD

Memphis has long been a landing place for musicians from the surrounding rural areas in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, and in the 1920s and 1930s, it was a wide open town with plenty of opportunities for musicians to perform their music and make a living. As a result of Memphis’ hub status, it developed a strong blues scene in the 1920s and 1930s, with a host of outstanding singers and players. Many of these musicians had successful careers as recording artists, but a surprisingly large number of similarly gifted musicians went unrecorded or only got the opportunity to record a few titles. This DVD lesson offers instruction in the music of many of the finest guitarists to record out of Memphis in the 1920s and 1930s.
Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of performances from the spectacular and hugely influential Memphis Minnie, transplanted Mississippians Furry Lewis, Robert Wilkins and Frank Stokes and more obscure names from the past like Tom Dickson and Allen Shaw. The songs that are taught on the DVD have been selected for their musical merit, but also to build your skills as a Country Blues guitarist, with numbers in D, G, E and C in standard tuning, as well as Open G tuning. The technique building that will come from learning these tunes will give you tools to go in whatever direction you wish to take your music.
A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. This includes all the lyrics to the songs as well as transcriptions of the guitar playing. The original old recordings of all the tunes is also included.

Titles include:
  • Tom Dickson – Happy Blues
  • Allen Shaw – I Couldn’t Help It
  • Rober Wilkins – Long Train Blues
  • Frank Stokes – Frank Stokes’ Dream
  • Memphis Minnie – Reachin’ Pete

GGW028 - John Miller - Jackson Blues Guitar

Code : GGW028
Isi : 1 DVD

John Miller Jackson Blues Guitar. Jackson, Mississippi attracted a host of blues musicians in the period 1910 -1940. Many players from small towns made their way to Jackson, which as the capital of Mississippi and a much larger city, held forth the promise of more and better work opportunities, and the possibility of making a living playing music rather than driving a mule or chopping cotton.
The Jackson Blues scene was an unusually rich one, stylistically, spanning the gap from the sophisticated Pop blues of Bo Carter to the low-down blues of Rube Lacy and a host of players working between those two extremes.
Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from Tommy Johnson, one of the fountainheads of the Mississippi blues, Itta Bena natives Rube Lacy and Ishmon Bracey, with their distinctive vocal head tones and intense playing, the great Geeshie Wiley, a woman who played and sang as strongly as any man, Walter Vinson, guitarist and lead singer for the Mississippi Sheiks, and Bo Carter, a player with a rich chordal vocabulary and Jazzy sound. The songs presented offer a wide range of left and right hand approaches and ways of keeping time and will expand your your ability to play blues, moving far afield from the simple alternating bass.
A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs’ lyrics as well as transcriptions of the guitar parts. Also included are the original source recordings from which the transcriptions taught in the lesson were taken.
Titles include:
  • Tommy Johnson – Lonesome Home Blues
  • Walter Vinson – Overtime Blues
  • Geeshie Wiley – Eagles On A Half
  • Rube Lacy – Ham Hound Crave
  • Ishmon Bracey – Four Day Blues

GGW027 - John Miller - Hillbilly Blues Guitar

Code : GGW027
Isi : 1 DVD

As the Country Blues began to be recorded, in the mid-1920s, it soon became apparent that the music was being played and appreciated not only by African-American musicians and audiences, but by white musicians and audiences as well. Many of these white musicians played with and learned from black musicians, for even in the Jim Crow Era there was always a good deal of musical interaction and exchange. So it is that the term “Hillbilly Blues” can be used to describe the music made by white musicians of that era in the Country Blues style.
Included on this DVD are songs from Clarence Greene, known mostly as a fiddler, but an ace guitarist, Dick Justice, who in his one day in the recording studio waxed ten masterful performances, Frank Hutchison who excelled at lap slide, harmonica on a rack and conventional blues picking, Sam McGee, a banjo and guitar master who went on to star on the Grand Ole Opry, Hobart Smith, a musical powerhouse, Maybelle Carter, a rocksteady and beautifully lyrical player who may have been the most influential of the bunch and Emry Arthur, a soulful singer and player who recorded one of the earliest versions of Man Of Constant Sorrow.
The songs selected for inclusion on the DVD have been chosen to introduce you to a variety of different keys and playing positions, as well as a host of different right hand techniques.
A PDF included on the DVD offers not only detailed transcriptions of the songs, but the songs’ lyrics, too. All of the original performances by the musicians are included on the DVD as bonus tracks, both as references and for your listening enjoyment.

GGW026 - John Miller - Country Blues Musicianship

Code : GGW026
Isi : 2 DVD

John Miller Country Blues Musicianship. In this 2-DVD lesson, master musician and teacher John Miller provides you with a thorough background in the musical language of the Blues, providing you with the tools that, with work and practice, will enable you to be a more complete musician – one who is able to: Recognize the form and know the progression after playing through it once or twice; Join in at jam sessions; Provide chordal accompaniment and “play time”, and Know where to play fills without clashing with the vocal.
On Disc 1, John starts out explaining the I, IV and V chords and shows how they provide the chordal basis for the blues. Then he goes on to explain and demonstrate the various blues forms most commonly encountered in the Country Blues, 12-bar blues, 8-bar blues, 16-bar blues, and 18-bar ragtime blues. As he works through these different forms, John demonstrates how the phrasing in each of these blues types is directed by the vocal, and how the accompanying instrument responds to it. This information is delivered in clear detail, not skimmed over, so that you’ll recognize the different blues forms when you hear them in the future. Disc 1 finishes up with performance footage of Blues greats Bill Broonzy, Brownie McGhee, John Jackson, Pink Anderson, Dave Van Ronk and Libba Cotten playing songs in the various blues forms.
On Disc 2, John addresses other issues involved in being a more confident and complete musician: Rhythm and timing, playing rhythm guitar, using a capo to create musical space when playing with other guitarists, turn-arounds and how they work, how to move ideas from one key to another on the guitar, and how to create an arrangement of your own.
The PDF files which can be found on each of the discs of Country Blues Musicianship expand on John’s instruction on the video and include tips that will help you understand and master the concepts that are being discussed in the lesson. Let Country Blues Musicianship help you get to the place where you can join in at jams, know where a song is going next and recognize and understand new songs with calmness.

GGW025 - John Miller - Atlanta Blues Guitar

Code : GGW025
Isi : 1 DVD

John Miller Atlanta Blues Guitar. Atlanta, in the period 1920 -1940, rivaled Memphis, St.Louis, Jackson and Chicago in the strength and vitality of its blues scene. It was home to a unique school of 12-string guitarists that included Blind Willie McTell, Barbecue Bob, Charlie Lincoln, Willie Baker and George Carter. Also on hand were the slick slide guitarist Fred McMullen, the accompaniment king, Curley Weaver and the spectacular up-and-comer, Buddy Moss. The scene was rounded out by an earlier generation of players, Peg Leg Howell foremost among them, who kept alive musical traditions that were in the eclipse.
Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from the youthful Buddy Moss, a player who influenced generations of East Coast players that followed him, George Carter, a mysterious 12-string guitarist who recorded only four titles, Curley Weaver, a player’s player, widely acknowledged to be among the finest accompanists in the blues, Julius Daniels, who came down from North Carolina to Atlanta to record early on and Peg Leg Howell, a bootlegger-turned musician who busked in the streets of Atlanta both as a soloist and in a trio with the fiddler Eddie Anthony and guitarist Henry Williams.
The songs presented in the lesson will expand both your right hand techniques and your knowledge of the neck, with one song employing the almost never encountered Open B flat tuning.
A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs’ lyrics as well as transcriptions of the guitar parts. Also included are the original source recordings from which the transcriptions taught in the lesson were taken.
He is a master and exponent of so much more than just country blues – and of course he is being aware of and listenting to his excellent recordings over many years in other styles. As always, Miller’s musical taste is exquisite: always a real artist’s nouse for the exquisite subtle sounds and melodies of more obscure artists, that are not always obvious to ordinary musicians and listeners. Miller above all instructers appreciates the value of timing and counting when instructing and though it is not always necessary, it is most valuable when the ear is not always enough to negotiate passages. John Miller’s humility of person, intelligence of instruction and mastery of instrument are the real thing.
John Miller’s teaching is a slow, methodical breakdown with anticipation of student struggles. His demeanor is humble, quiet, respectful, and enthusiastic for the music. With judicious use of the pause button, it is as close as a student can come to face to face lessons with a master.
