Great book for the beginner to advanced student. Lots of material covered in this book and to go through it all will take some serious time and commitment. Tab Rudiment system is awesome, grooves are killer, and the fill variations are inspiring. Overall, this will definitely take you to the next level if you put in the time and effort required. Pat gives an incredible amount of material here, covering all aspects of drumming, and his playing is world class. He breaks down lots of great hand exercises (that benefited me as well as my students), gives all the rudiments in a new “TAB” system (you will memorize your rudiments in no time!) and puts them into cool combos. The best part of the Book/DVD is the 50 or so tasty grooves Pat created. All the play alongs are on an mp3 CD (included!) and the music is in different sub genres, like R&B, Gospel, Pop/Rock, Reggaeton, Brazilio Funk, Salsa Funk, and more… just a wide variety of challenging grooves, and Pat plays the mess out of them on the DVD… talk about feel!

Finally, Pat has some serious chops as well as groove, and he shows it off in the “Fills” section. He shows some 6 stroke rolls, split 16th, and sextuplet fills VERY SLOWLY on the DVD, and gives plenty of orchestration demonstrations.

This video is a great one if you like to play funk on the drums. He covers the importance of ghosting the notes and using two different stick heights during your playing. Simple, yet informative. All in all, a good DVD from a great funk drummer. Makes you feel like you are taking a lesson from him, especially towards the end of the DVD when he is sort of instructing. Well worth it if you are into funk playing. Could help rock players as well. If your interested in funk drumming… this is the book/cd for you. It’s fairly advanced material so would not be appropriate for a beginner. Good stuff. It gives you things to work. And work you must to get just a few of the skills that this monster player will share. He is a great educator. Everything is well-explained. His concepts are amazing. His philosophy in drumming is profound.
Garibaldi is an amazing drummer with a unique approach that can help elevate any drummer’s skill level and repertoire no matter what genre(s) you play. I would recommend using it along with the book “The Code of Funk” which comes with the play along cd. I think it is great that some of the most successful drummers have made dvd’s which allows the drumming community the opportunity to learn with masters when we otherwise never would have had the chance. Really immersing yourself in a dvd like this can’t help but broaden your view of things.

Includes an unbelievable, unaccompanied drum solo not seen since its broadcast in May of 1978.For any number of reasons, Buddy disbanded the big band he had been leading since 1966, with its last engagement being at Jimmy’s in early 1974. He scaled down to a sextet, and at the same time, lent his name to a new, New York city nightspot called”Buddy’s Place.” Now a New York city resident, Rich appeared on virtually every New York-based television program promoting \his\ club and the sextet. This included appearances on “I’ve Got A Secret” (where he played drums upside down), guest-hosting the \Dick Cavett\ program, and appearing as both panelist, and in this case, “Mystery Guest,” on “What’s My Line?”.

Buddy was always relaxed during his many concerts at Disneyland though the years. He was close to home, he could settle in for about a weeks’ stay in one place, and the Disney crowds were always young and enthusiastic. By the mid-1980s, his solos had often become predictable, and Buddy would be the first to tell you that he didn’t like soloing anyway. But, he knew what the fans were waiting for and always gave them their monies’ worth.In this 1984 solo, however, Buddy Rich is as technically astounding as ever, and more importantly, consistently fresh, surprising and inventive.
