This is the first instructional program by drummer’s drummer and Grammy Award winner Steve Jordan, who offers a fascinating look into how and why he plays. Long awaited by drummers around the world, this DVD includes live performances by Bob Cranshaw, Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, and Bernie “Dr. Woo” Worrell.
It also features commentary from Jackson Browne, Leroy Clouden, Levon Helm, Keith Richards and the late Timothy White, Billboard editor-in-chief. “One of the funkiest drummers of all time? Steve Jordan shows he’s all that and more on this excellent DVD, a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the legendary groove-maker.”
Steve Jordan has been a musician’s musician since the 1970’s, coming up in the streets of NYC playing funk & fusion and then coming into our living rooms every night during the week as a member of The David Lettermen Band. This DVD shows Steve’s passion for playing for the music. He graciuosly demonstrates various grooves he came up with on records by David Sanborn, Sheryl Crow & The Pretenders with special guests Bernie Worrell & Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar. This is a lesson that needs to be watched again & again. Thank you Steve for showing us how it’s done by a true legend.
If you are a song drummer, this is the DVD for you. Just good groove playing. Plus, some great quotes that put the drummers role into perspective. He doesn’t spend time on analysis and never overplays. Just nice, tasty playing, and that to me, is more inspiring than a bunch of solo’s.
Steve does give a lot of examples of some of the beats he’s played over the years, but he doesn’t really break them down piece by piece form a technical standpoint. He basically just says, “Here’s what I did for Cheryl Crow” and plays it. And while this practice does prove to be insightful at times, about half of the beats he chooses to illustrate are fairly simple ones, and you could really figure them out by just listening to the record without purchasing the DVD.
