It’s demanding at first, at least until your non-dominant foot wakes up, but once it does, the applications of this method are pretty amazing. Besides offering plenty of exercises to help equally strenghten both feet, Bowders also demonstrates this method in several musical interludes, all of which I, for one, would like to hear on a CD. There’s plenty of helpful material on this DVD, and some if requires patience, but if you stick with it, your feet (and by extension, your double-bass playing) will thank you.

This DVD shows Steve’s passion for playing for the music. He graciuosly demonstrates various grooves he came up with on records by David Sanborn, Sheryl Crow & The Pretenders with special guests Bernie Worrell & Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar. This is a lesson that needs to be watched again & again. Thank you Steve for showing us how it’s done by a true legend.
If you are a song drummer, this is the DVD for you. Just good groove playing. Plus, some great quotes that put the drummers role into perspective. He doesn’t spend time on analysis and never overplays. Just nice, tasty playing, and that to me, is more inspiring than a bunch of solo’s.
Steve does give a lot of examples of some of the beats he’s played over the years, but he doesn’t really break them down piece by piece form a technical standpoint. He basically just says, “Here’s what I did for Cheryl Crow” and plays it. And while this practice does prove to be insightful at times, about half of the beats he chooses to illustrate are fairly simple ones, and you could really figure them out by just listening to the record without purchasing the DVD.

This instructional DVD would be the thesaurus – a tool that is very useful once you have a basic vocabulary.
Like Ed Thigpen’s DVD, this one is instructional. Steve Smith’s and Adam Nussbaum’s DVD is more of an example by performance with many examples of how to play the same music in different ways, but no specific “how to’s”. Like Ed Thigpen, Clayton steps you through the basics, starting with various grips and when they are appropriate. Here he covers German, French, cradle, eastern and matched, mixing and matching them in the left and right hands. Then he goes into lessons on sweeps, taps, and other parts of the brush vocabulary to show how to achieve the best sound for the music you support. He demonstrated it with just a bass player, then with a band. The bass only demonstrations reinforce just how important the bassist and drummer are to each other, and you will get some solid ideas about how to lock in.
You need to be aware that Clayton’s teaching style is different from Ed Thigpen’s style. Where Ed patiently demonstrates a technique and reinforces it with additional instruction, Clayton goes through each technique, using the performances as a reinforcement tool. You’ll find yourself frequently stopping the DVD in order to fully grasp what Clayton is teaching. Another aspect of this DVD is the brush-specific rudiments that Clayton has developed.

On this DVD, Dave concentrates on time playing, constructing a groove, beat displacement, cymbal technique, phrasing, creating a drum part, playing in odd times, and soloing. This video also features three performances of songs from Contemporary Drummers + One, a Latin groove, and some fantastic solos. This is a great instructional video. Dave is not an excellent teacher, but he is a very good one. His got amazing technique which he tries to pass on to you.
A super one from Dave. This is one the best instructional video and is a must buy after his initial ‘Back to Basics’ video. It’s the answer to all those ‘How does he do that! ‘ queries and an essential tutorial for any drummer serious on progressing. Kudos to Dave for bringing out such wonderful learning material.
His triplet exercises between the hands and feet are wonderful. When he does it up-tempo, you realize that that’s basically all he does while he solos: he goes in and out of triplets, sixteenths, and thirty-second notes. It’s still tough as hell, but at least we understand how he’s doing it.
Most helpful, though, is his explanation of how to approach odd time signatures. Even advanced drummers typically can’t “feel” nine, seven, or five, and Weckl offers some great tips on how to think of them in a musical, half-time feel.
