This is not a particularly complex very well shot DVD, it’s just you and the guitarist, he remains sat at all times and the background consists of a large Marshall amp and the logo of the DVD production company so it is quite boring to watch.

The Amazing Guitar Secrets course comes well-packaged in a good-sized box. We rated the overall production quality of Amazing Guitar Secrets a 6½ out of 10. The DVD videos are clear and well produced, but have several shortcomings. A split view of the right and left hand is an essential part of a guitar training video, but is strangely absent in this course. A minor nitpick we had is the DVD packaging and DVD menus were for some reason overlooked and honestly look like they were drawn up by someone who was just cutting his teeth on Windows Paint. (Ok, maybe not quite that bad, but still...)
The CD-ROM that's included with the course contains audio examples of most of the material in the books, and the jam tracks, (if you decide to get the upgraded version) The jam tracks are great, though they don't have any other instrumental accompaniment besides the guitar. You can't play along solo either if you wanted to either which is too bad.
Some of the topics covered: Amazing Guitar Secrets starts of by teaching beginner's stuff like the parts of the guitar, stringing, tuning, playing and reading tabs, and then quickly progresses to more advanced sessions that teach intervals, major and minor scales, chord building, modes, bends, vibrato, hammer on/offs, tapping, tremolo picking, sliding palm muting, trills, and barre chords.
The 400+ page coiled workbook (not pictured above) includes all the textual learning material. It contains a Progress Tracker that we recommend you use, the main Amazing Guitar Secrets Guide Book, and mini-books including, 20 Strength and Agility Exercises, Guitar Theory Made Easy, Quick and Easy Way to Play Rhythms, Mastering the Major and Minor Scales, and more...
In our opinion, the pace of Amazing Guitar Secrets is a wee bit too fast. Therefore those who are already a somewhat familiar with the guitar and music theory in general may benefit more from the course than a completely new guitarist.

Walk softly and carry a big F-sharp suspended. If legendary Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson had a mantra, that might be it. That chord (technically an F#7sus4) is known to his legion of fans as "The Alex Chord," or "The Hemispheres Chord," as it is the opening chord to Rush's 1978 prog-rock opus Hemispheres. It can also be heard ringing out on "Far Cry," the opening cut on Rush's nineteenth studio album, 2007's Snakes and Arrows.
That a single chord can be associated so strongly with one guitar player is testament to Lifeson's influence on the medium. He is a guitar player's guitar player. Where Steve Vai may make us say "I wish I could do that," Alex Lifeson makes us say, "I wish I'd thought of that."
Snakes and Arrows was Rush's 27th album to appear in the Billboard Top 200, and it turned into a long, good ride for the band. The album was followed by a marathon tour spanning two years and two continents, a double live album, and the November 2008 release of the three-disc DVD/Blu-Ray, Snakes and Arrows Live, in which Rush puts on a clinic on how to play a rock concert.
As a musician, Alex Lifeson has occasionally been overlooked, in part because he is a guitar player dedicated to serving the song instead of stepping on it. As most guitarists know, that kind of restraint is no easy feat. Of course, serving a Rush song can be like serving a 12-course meal. If you can play, and you like Leslie West, you’ll enjoy this DVD. You’re not going to learn to play the guitar using this Video. He stresses “Tone is everything” and basically that’s true. You don’t have to be the best player in the world, but with great tone, you can do just fine. There is some cool stuff where he goes over the Amps and Effects he uses, and I love his humor! He tells you how he gets as much as possible playing the Pentatonic and Blues Scale. I got a kick out of one of his lines “Fenders are good on cars”. He’s always been a diehard Gibson guy, although I have seen him using Steinbergers, and Dean Guitars. He plays “Mississippi Queen”, and “Theme” slowly, so you can see what he’s doing.

This three DVD set is not for beginning guitarists. You will need to have a working knowledge of scales to take advantage of the instruction right out of the box. This DVD is designed to help all guitar players, beginning improvisers and even the best professional players, find their own improvisational voices. Each DVD introduces a new level of skill. To master each level, and thus each DVD, will require the student at least one year of his or her time. This is not some video game. It is serious teaching. Yet, the instruction is presented in the most personal of ways. You will get to know John McLaughlin. (This is especially true after you have viewed the hilarious bonus outtakes). Filming was aided by many capable people including technicians and advisers from Apple Computer. It is beautifully filmed and recorded, cogently correlated and even has an interface with McLaughlin’s website. Its format will become the gold standard of instructional DVD’s. This is the best instructional DVD package (or book) for getting a musician up to a high level of improvisation that I’ve encountered yet. There are a lot of similar instructional materials that provide a list of scales, modes, etc., and some chord progressions and exercises to go with them, but these often leave the student high and dry, without a good demonstration and analysis of how the modes can be used to create real music. This DVD provides a multitutde of superb improvisations by John McLaughlin himself using the modes and chord progressions at each stage, and an analysis of how each improvisation relates to the modes, chord progressions, and exercises provided for the student. Not just for guitarists – although it’s designed with guitarists in mind, any instrumentalist can learn a lot from this DVD package.
This Is The Way I Do It is not an instructional set for the faint of heart. To take advantage of the lessons presented here requires at least a high-intermediate level of skill as well as a good amount of patience and dedication. It is most definitely not aimed at beginners, but is rather one of the very few instructional DVDs that can offer a wealth of information to even the most advanced players. Some may be put off by the relatively high price of the set but the amount and quality of information (which will take most players years to fully take advantage of) makes it well worth it to those who are serious about taking their playing to the next level.
